Evaluation Question 1

QUESTION 1

Introduction
Before i could being design and making my music video, CD Digipack and Magazine Advertisement i have to conduct a range of research to the apply that information with in these created areas.

Music Video
Here is the finished version of our music video which feature a range of locations, objects, animals and people( mostly Ophelia).

To start the process of our music video we had to research into a chosen genre which was Alternative and the focus in detail about how those music videos are present and what is include within the music videos.

The main features we concentrated on was: Use of Camera, Use Of Editing and Use Of Mise-En Scene.
These areas were very important in the information of how these existing music videos link and copy each other in these subjects.

We found that Alternative music videos all include some sort of 'ART' that could be in the forms of drawing, collaging  and creative dance.

I have also created arrange of post that focus on the importance of music videos and how to create a good and successful music video.
The key information with in these pages are about the study and key features of a music video.  This researched helped with our own music video by providing information on the main features we need to focus on which were:
1.Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2.There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustration, amplification or contradiction).

3.There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustration, amplification or contradiction).

4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5.There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6.There are often intersexual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc.).

Thought-out these questions i answered against another alternative music video and the most important feature was (Illustration, Amplification an Contradiction) which was a way to see how the music video connects to the lyrics, artist and genre. Our music challenged these forms as our music video includes random and unrelated situation which does connect to 'Contradiction' but also represents 'Amplification' in some lyrics but with the meaning behind the lyric and not the lyric itself.

For us to understand more on the Alternative genre of music video we conducted research on one music video form Alt-J called Breezeblocks.  This music also includes 'Amplification' by not only using 'Illustration' within the lyrics.

Depicting the meaning behind this video helped us create a range of ideas and conventions for our own music video.

The research into the forms and conventions of real music video lead us to then choosing potential artist from the same genre and then choosing are favourite artist which was Matt Corby. When research Corby we found that his own music videos challenges the forms and conventions of existing music video which we found very interesting and inspiring of our own ideas.  The most simplest but engaging video was 'MONDAY' which we then deiced to recreate for our own music video. Through-out this video there is no other location or object other then Matt Corby himself, which shows the importance of his song and makes the viewers concentrate on his singing.

Not only does this go against most o the conventions of music videos form the clothes, locations and people included, it concentrates more on the beauty of the lyrics.

All of this research has helped us though-out the planning stages of our music video. Each stage we linked back to the music video analyses, features, studies etc which massively inspired our planning.

We found that choosing our locations was easy and simple due to us planning out the pitch and range of vitals ideas which include some conventions of music videos.

The wooden locations linked with the conventions of alternative music videos as these includes a range of nature and spiritual objects.
Nature was the main part of our music video from fire shots, establishing shots and shots including animals  and Ophelia.

We challenge the casting of our music video by casting a girl instead of a guy which was against the conventions of  a man sung song.

However Ophelia choose and felt comfortable singing a mans song which worked well when we casted her and as well as filming her for the real music video.

We then had to choose the clothes which was highly inspired by the nature and alternative genre of this video.

These clothes was also consider against the props included which was slightly inspired by existing music video but mostly by Alt-J. This makes the props connected to the conventions of existing alternative music videos in a positive approach.

When it came to the testing and editing process we tended to lean away from research we gathered due to wanting to create our own style within the music video. The black out effects and cuting to the beats is a very common convention of existing music videos however we change the way they were constructed and viewed which made the video very clam even though it was covered it a range of footage.

Overall
We did consider  using and developing the conventions of existing professional music videos however we mostly challenged these conventions due to use wanting to create your own style while flowing Matt Corby's research. We did conduct arrange of research then did effect are ideas connecting to our music video which massive helped us however we still changed some of the conventions for our music video.

CD Digipack
Here is the finished version of our CD Digipack which we constructed and developed from a range of ideas and existing products.

We started the Cd Digipack by researching the history of this advertisement. This researched helped us gather the key importance of  a CD Digipack and the influence and promotion it helps occur in the music industry.

From this we found existing CD digipacks in our current era and analysed the key conventions portrayed on the packs.
We found which images are suitable, what text is needed, where certain features are placed in order to attract the target audience etc.

All of this information informed us what is expected in  CD Digipack which will make it successful and contain a professional appearance.

We then decided we gathered enough information on the key conventions and aesthetics to start designing some ideas that contained our own photograph's and also connects to the alternative genre of music.

We focused our design on nature which plays a big part in alternative and calming music. We also found from our target audience feedback that the more nature content it has the more connection it has to the music.

We also found from the target audience feedback that existing CD digipacks link with alternative music tend to also contain natural and unique aesthetics.

After all the research we then knew what aesthetics we had to achieve in order to fit the common conventions of CD digipacks and connect to our target audience we used professional Photoshop magazines that teach simple but creative steps to create interesting effects within the panels.

We then made our music magazines from other previous analysis and test outs however we experimented with Photoshop by researching the books first to gather key and interesting styles we could include.

From all this research we were able to add the most common and key conventions used in existing CD Digipacks to create a professional and creative look. We challenged the common conventions in place a photo across two panels which is rare and this has made the product more unique.

Magazine Advertisement

Here is the finished look of our Music Advertisement

We started the same with the magazine advertisements by researching the history of magazines and the key conventions and features of each one.

We have then concentrated on the main popular magazines from each genre which we found that if our magazine advertisement was to be published it would be publish inside the Q magazine or Uncut magazine.

We did some more research but on existing magazine advertisements for our genre of music and looked at there common conventions. This has helped us create the key features on our own magazine advertisement when designing and constructing.

We also gathered target audience views on the most unique and interesting conventions used that we should maybe include in our own magazine advertisement.

To finish our research  and to start designing we looked at Matt Corby's existing magazine advertisements which helped us know about the right colour choices and positioning's.

We then completed our music magazine advertisement by designing our own layouts , fonts and images but we made sure to re visit certain research that included the key conventions that we needed to add to our advertisement to make it professional and correct.

Conclusion

Through-out all our advertisements we conducted important and useful researched that helped us gather the key conventions used for each platform and then combining, developing, using and or challenging those conventions onto our music video, CD Digipack and Magazine advertisement.
