Music Video Planning: Initial ideas

This is a mind map of different ideas that we can included when filming our music video.

These are different ideas what the music video could be about when considering the filming process:

To expand our knowledge on what we could include in our music video we looked at a range of different music videos to see what they include. From this we have found out that some music videos contain montage features from 'home-filmed' footage, some contain the artist lip singing and their instruments, and some don't contain lip singing at all, its just the artists 'having fun'. These are all the different ways which we can consider when coming to film our music video. There are different conventions what we needs to consider when coming to film.

There are a range of different conventions in music videos. The common ones are as followed;
Performance: This is when the music video consists of the artist performing in the video. the video shows the artist continuously performing the song. however, this type of music video included NO other narrative scenes in the video. An example of this in a well known music video is 'Beyonce- Love on Top'. In music videos which solely dedicated to performance are not as popular.

The reason for this is that the target audience would not be able to engage with the song or video. However, as this uses extreme costumes and lighting to display performance in a creative way it is more entrusting to watch. When creating music videos these aren't as popular for the reason that the target audience wouldn't connect as music as they would with other examples of music videos.

For filming our music video for Matt Corby's song 'Monday" this style of music video wouldn't work as the genre indie, which Corby fits into. This genre of music video doesn't suit Matt Corby's style. Matt Corby's has slow acoustic songs which aren't usually upbeat. However, for the music video to be classes as a performance it usually contains quick and upbeat song.

Narrative: Narrative music videos follow a storyline. There are two different types of narrative. One being linear narrative. This is when it starts a story at the beginning and goes through the middle, then ends the story at the end of the music video. The other is fragmented narrative which is the opposite of linear narrative. Fragmented narrative is when there is a story told throughout the duration of the video. However, it doesn't always necessarily link back to the lyrics of the song. An example of linear narrative music videos is 'Katy Perry-Part Of Me'. The target audience with this style of music video will be able to experience the story through the music video and will understand the lyrics from the video as they are being shown.

For filming out music video, this wont be a good choice of style of music video as Matt Corby's music doesn't have story through the lyrics. This would be a problem as it wouldn't make sense if we used this style of music video.

Matt Corby's "Monday" > lyrics:

In the song which we are using for our music video, there aren't a lot of words its more sounds created by the voice. We need to consider when filming out music video which conventions we use as from doing research on Matt Corby we have released that his music videos include him and his instrument.

When looking at the lyrics of the song as there aren't the same amount as most songs it will be hard to create a narrative music video with the lyrics what there is. As the song has a slow peaceful melody it will also be hard to create a performance music video unless it is a still performance with the artist are their instrument (the voice)

Extended research:

To get a wider look on Matt Corby's what is included within his music videos we research picked out the key features from his music videos. As Matt Corby isn't a 'well-known' artist he hasn't created many music videos. This allows us to included certain aspects of Matt Corby's music videos to allow them to be as     'Real' as possible. From looking at existing Matt Corby's music videos we have found that he doesn't have many official music videos for his songs. Most including live versions of the track and recordings from shows or different radio station performances.
