Research : My Favourite Music Video : Textual Analysis

This is a Textual Analysis of one of my favourite video by Mcbusted 'Air Guitar'

On text:

"Air Guitar" is a debut single by English pop rock supergroup McBusted. It was written by Tom Fletcher, James Bourne, Matt Willis and Steve Robson, and produced by Robson and Jason Perry. The song was realised on 23rd November 2014 through island records as the lead single from the band self-titled debut studio album 'McBusted'.

On 8th October 2014, the official lyrics video was uploaded on the bands veto account; the lyric video resembled the video game guitar hero. however, it was later removed due to the song including an unpermitted lyrical reference to Beyonce "crazy in love" which has since been replaced. The official music video was realised on 6th November. The video features the band in a large room where they, along with their instruments and fans, keep reappearing and disappearing.

Content:

Starts off in an empty room space which is then followed by one member from the band, with a mid shot of them walking in and shutting an invisible movie taker.

gifs websiteAn effect of a white flash is followed. The song begins to start and this is with a low angle tracking the crowd forward towards the band. As the song is starting the camera movement tracks from a close up of the guitar to a close up of the face.
Each member of the band having a panning shot up before close up before lyrics in the video.

As one of the band members are lip singing the song, a mid shot which is getting closer towards he member.

The edit cuts back to a close up of the band members playing their instruments. The jumps to an extreme close up just of the instruments. The camera shots goes back to an empty room and one member of the band singing. The shot is a mid shot tracking back. This is followed by a mid shot/two shot of 2 other members playing and singing with their instruments in a crowded room. Another close up of the guitars then tracking up to the meter playing, while one of them are singing. The camera then tracks around the drummers while he is splaying. A mid shot is used so you can see the crowd around him.

This is followed by close up, low angle looking up at the singer while tracing around him. The edit cuts back tot he empty room, where one of the members alone are dancing to the lyrics. During this there is a flash effect and the body of the member disappears and we are left with just the shoes moving.

A long shot is then used where you can see all the band playing their instruments in a busy room full. it then goes to a two shot of 2 of the band members singing. A jump cut between each band member having a close up. A high angle looking down while while tracking around the drummer. An stabbing shot of the crowded room while a skating ramp is centre focus to recreate the action in the lyrics. Jumps cuts between close up of the instruments to a long shot of all the members keep occurring back and fourth. While this is happening the instruments keeping disappearing and re-apperaing which is created during the editing process of the video. High angle is use arching around the drums.

Panning, mid shot to show their 'fans' in the room. Jump cuts keep happening between a two shot and a close up of their instruments. As the lyrics 'Put an imaginary string and break it' the camera tracks back from the guitar where the member is pointing towards the string. The jump back to a long shot of the drums disappearing and then re-apperaing. A high angle mid shot is used the skating ramp as you can see the skateboard disappearing and re-apperaing, which is edited during the editing process of the video being made. When the lyric "now my friends keep thinking" it cuts to a long shot of all the members messing around with their instruments. When the melodic guitar pieces come in the camera zooms in on an extreme close up of that string it is being played on. The edit jumps back to the ramp where a BMXer rappers and re appears. The beat from the drum is when each different piece of drum got missing to the sound. This also happens to the guitars but the band members keep playing the 'Air guitar' As the music builds up the tension there are less cuts but more tracking around each member. The body of the drummer has disappeared. This is because in the filming process he would of wore a green suit in which when it comes to edit the green is eliminated and left with just the clothes. AS the tension is built its a long shot is used showing that the band members are waiting for the drop. As the tension becomes at its peak the band suddenly are outside on a field with no instruments.

The music begins again and as the band jumps it cuts to them landing back inside of the stage with the crowd around them. A long shot of the band is so the location is clear again. The editing process of the cuts are fast again to the beat.  The lyric "like my air guitar" one of the members guitar disappears the re-apperas to the beat. This is shown in a mid shot of them alone standing in front of speakers. While the song is coming to an end each of the members have a mid shot on their own which is at a high angle tracking around them. The ending of the music video is the crowd coming closer to the stage. with then cuts to one of the members alone in front of the speakers about the smash his guitar on the floor then when the lyric " air guitar" is said the guitar disappears and a white glass is adding into the editing process. A jump cut to him alone on the stage once the music has stopped then a white flash then a blank screen to symbols that the music video is ended.
